Twenty years. Two people…
ONE DAY is a romantic drama directed by Lone Scherfig (An Education), the big screen adaptation of David Nicholls belongs to him, his novel, One Day.
After being together one day, on July 15, 1988, graduation day faculty between Emma Morley (Anne Hathaway Oscar-nominated) and Dexter Mayhew (Jim Sturgess of Across the Universe) it arrives a friendship that will last a lifetime. She is a girl coming from the working class, principles and ambition who dreams of making the world better. He is a playboy from a wealthy family who dreams that the world will be his playground land.
In the two decades that followed, the two live their relationship several days through July 15. Together or apart, we see Dex and Em on friends through thick and hard, with shattered hopes and dreams with happy moments or in tears. Somewhere along this journey, the two realize that what they were looking and hoping always been there for them. As the significance of that day of 1988 be disclosed that two begin to understand the nature of love and life.
“It’s a love story after all, ‘” says David Nicholls, “talks about friendship, family, nostalgia and regret about the way in which our hopes and dreams are not fulfilled exactly we would like. It’s a story with shades dulci- sour. ”
When he began filming One Day, the novel was already a bestseller worldwide. It was translated into 31 languages, a rarity nowadays, and was first in sales in the UK, Italy and Sweden, in second place in Germany and No. 3 in Russia. The novel won the National Book Award for Galaxy fiction books for the general public and, in 2009, when it was first published, it has sold over 400,000 copies in the UK. Critics were as enthusiastic, Henry Goldblatt Entertainment Weekly about the film saying it is “an intense portrait, beautiful and devastating two soul mates”.
Filming took place in the summer of 2010 and lasted eight weeks. It was cast in London, Edinburgh, Paris and Dinard, a small town in Brittany which has replaced Greece holiday scenes from the book, supplying it with brio by romantic landscapes.
The soundtrack is enhanced by a soundtrack that evokes the music that listens Dex and Em throughout life in different eras. Karen Elliott, supervisor musical gave the film a bonus unexpected: Elvis Costello, musician symbol, saw a montage unedited film and was so impressed that he wrote an original piece which she played with his band , The imposters. The song is entitled “Sparkling Day” and Scherfig says simply: “It’s a great song.”
