After a pandemic kills most children and adolescents in America, the 2% who survive develops various superpowers. Survivors of the disease are left with unnatural powers that can only be described by a color: green (super intelligence), blue (telekinesis), yellow (control of electricity), orange (power over the mind) and red (fire control). They are considered too dangerous for society, and are taken from their families and placed in detention camps. Ruby Daly, a 16-year-old teenager with telekinetic powers, is sent to Thurmond, a camp for children like her. There she feels unhappy and scared of what has happened to her like her. Ruby manages to escape from the horrible camp with the help of the children’s league, and from there her life changes forever. She joins a group of teenagers who are trying to escape the evil government.
