Wanting to write a modern adaptation of the ancient myth of Medea, writer and literature teacher Rama attends the public trial of the Senegalese immigrant Laurence Coly at the Saint-Omer court. The young woman is accused of killing her daughter. Being pregnant and having Senegalese roots herself, Rama feels more and more connected to the young Coly.
